ChanPlaNS

ChanPlaNS Sample

The long-term goal of ChanPlaNS is to perform a complete, volume-limited Chandra/ACIS X-ray survey of the ∼120 PNe that lie within ∼1.5 kpc (based on the well-vetted PN distances listed in Frew 2008, Acker et al. 1992, and Cahn et al. 1992). At ∼30 ks exposure per object, the ChanPlaNS survey will eventually require a total Chandra time commitment of ∼3.6 Msec.

ChanPlaNS began in Cycle 12, with a 570 ks Large Program to observe 21 nearby (D ≤1.5 kpc) high-excitation PNe that had yet to be observed by Chandra/ACIS. ChanPlaNS continued in Cycle 14 with a sample 24 predominately compact (hence young) PNe. A table of the observations considered in the ChanPlaNS research program are provided below with links to PNe-specific pages that provide basic information, optical and X-ray images, and available results.

X-ray Visionary Program

To complete ChanPlaNS, we have requested an X-ray Visionary Program (XVP) through the Chandra X-ray Center Cycle 15 Call for Proposals. The 60 targets requested for the XVP comprise the remaining unobserved PNe in our volume-limited sample and, if awarded, would be acquired over the next three cycles (15, 16, and 17). Basic data and optical images of this sample can be found here: ChanPlaNS XVP.
